Value Scope: Each way horseracing tips from Steve Jones for Saturday on ITV

The Flat is back as racing returns on the level on the grass with the first big race of the year, the William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster, and Value Scope has found an each way proposition

Steve Jones has four selections for Saturday on ITV

Trust in God for the William Hill Lincoln. William Haggas might not have reached such heavenly status, even among racing fans, quite yet but no trainer has won this traditional season-opening handicap more times.

His GODWINSON (3.35) looks to have a good chance of giving him his fifth victory in the prestigious Doncaster contest. He swooped late to win at Goodwood last August and he had valid excuses when well held in two of the hottest autumn handicaps later in the year.

His fast-finishing second in the Newbury Spring Cup first time out last year showed he goes well fresh and he has the potential to be much better this season.

The likely strong pace should also suit Cieren Fallon’s mount. Have 2pts each-way at 14-1. Sky Bet is paying out on seven places.

Britain’s oldest trainer, Mick Easterby, might well land the consolation race for the Lincoln 52 years after his brother Peter last won the main event.

His SPIRIT OF ACKLAM (1.50) won on his return to action last year and he also ran well when making his comeback from a four-month break later in the season.

He’s been gelded over the winter and his proven stamina is often a help in the William Hill Spring Mile. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1.

There are a couple of interesting contenders in the two divisions of the apprentice handicap that close the card.

FREDDY ROBINSON (4.45) was consistent on the Flat last summer. He had the misfortune to be beaten a nose in three successive races after winning over today’s 1m2f distance at Beverley.

His fitness cannot be questioned as he arrives fit from a spell running over hurdles and I prefer him to trainer Brian Ellison’s more fancied runner Bulldog Spirit. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1. Several firms are offering five places.

LASER FOCUS (5.20) is another horse who had a spell hurdling during the winter. His wins at Huntingdon and Fakenham in November saw him shoot up the weights.

He’s since been in quite shocking form on the all-weather but artificial surfaces don’t suit James Owen’s runner.

His turf form on the Flat is much better. In eight races on the level, he has recorded three victories and finished in the places on a further three occasions.

This race should be run at a decent pace on easy ground. That set up would be perfect. Have 2pts each-way at 12-1.
