Newsboy’s horseracing tips for Tuesday’s four meetings, including Goodwood Nap

Newsboy fancies his nap, Master Vintner, to win at Goodwood and also hopes Golden Thorn can score at Southwell and complete his Daily Double

MASTER VINTNER (3.33, Nap) is fancied to step up from his debut third to St Leger favourite Scandinavia and win for his new trainer Ralph Beckett on Tuesday. The son of Mastercraftsman kept on well at Navan in May over a mile and a quarter on his only run for trainer Alan Oliver to finish five lengths behind Aidan O’Brien’s colt, now a general 5-4 for the last UK Classic of the season in two Saturdays time.

Returning from a break and now in Beckett’s Hampshire yard, the three year-old should relish the softer ground and take all the beating in the Cleansing Service Group Novice Stakes, again over 10 furlongs. He may have most to fear from the Marcus Tregoning-trained Goodwood Mogul who could improve for the step up in trip under William Buick.

At Southwell, GOLDEN THORN (7.30, nb) was revitalised by first-time blinkers last time when readily beating an eight-strong field at Windsor in July. The three-year-old filly soon led and, although she was headed two furlongs out, my selection rallied to see off Toralou by one and a quarter lengths.

She has already proved effective on the all-weather – finishing runner-up at Kempton in December – and, with her trainer Andrew Balding in red-hot form, the daughter of Dark Angel can take the Golf And Gallop Handicap under PJ McDonald.
