Crystal Palace had already completed a farewell video dedicated to captain Marc Guehi before pulling the plug on his transfer to Liverpool. A video has emerged containing highlights from the defender’s stint with the Eagles’ branding and ending with the message: « Thank you skip. »

Palace boss Oliver Glasner won his transfer battle with CEO Steve Parish as Marc Guehi’s £35million move to Liverpool was cancelled at the 11th hour. The FA Cup-winning coach threatened to quit if his captain was sold.

Guehi had undergone a medical in London ahead of making the move to Anfield after the south London side agreed a £35m fee with Liverpool. A deal sheet had even been handed in as the transfer deadline passed at 7pm before the deal unravelled as Parish pulled the plug.

The Eagles saw a deal for Brighton defender Igor Julio to fall through but did sign 19-year-old centre-back Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse. It was not deemed enough to fill the gaping hole Guehi would leave, despite having just a year remaining on his contract.

Glasner spoke to Guehi, who has been a model professional throughout, on Monday and expressed his desire to keep him for the remainder of the season. That message was said to be understood, and while he wanted to leave it is not expected he would kick up a fuss knowing Liverpool are likely to return.

Glasner may have found his position boldened after Bayer Leverkusen’s decision to sack Erik ten Hag after just two league matches saw him quickly linked with a Bundesliga move. The coach already made his stance clear on Sunday however.

« I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season, » Glasner told BBC Sport, after Crystal Palace’s win over Aston Villa.

« We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.

« We wanted a replacement by 1 July. It is 31 August and we have no replacement. We have this agreement so it is clear from me. He is such a crucial player. He is one of our key players – he is our captain. »

Palace turned down as much as £65m for Guehi last summer when Newcastle United came calling. But on this occasion Parish initially believed that his side had to cash in if their valuation was met, with the defender not planning on signing a contract extension.
