Jamie Carragher believes Dominik Szoboszlai should remain at right-back after hailing his transition at Liverpool with the Hungarian having moved from his usual midfield position after Jeremie Frimpong’s injury
Jamie Carragher claims that Dominik Szoboszlai has finally « found his position » at right-back – suggesting the Hungarian is far more effective in the backline than he was as an attacking midfielder.
The Liverpool star was on target as the Reds saw off Arsenal at the weekend, producing a stunning free-kick from more than 30 yards in front of the Kop. Szoboszlai’s strike cannoned in off the post to beat David Raya and helped him claim the Player of the Match award.
Szoboszlai was signed by Jurgen Klopp two years ago having impressed at RB Leipzig and was very much a creative influence from midfield. That is a position he had occupied at Anfield until this year with Arne Slot dropping him back to the right-back slot.
He has little to no experience playing the role, but Liverpool need to plug gaps following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exit and Jeremie Frimpong’s injury – but Carragher believes it could be a new permanent home.
He said on social media: « Nine pts from nine is a great return for LFC after playing two of their toughest games, that were both drawn last season. The back four was outstanding, VVD. Dom has found his position! Full back suits him better than the attacking midfield role. »

Gary Neville was hugely complimentary of Szoboszlai when covering Liverpool’s win on commentary and claimed he was giving him the Player of the Match award before his sensational free-kick. The Hungarian had never played right-back until the win at Newcastle, but is happy to keep doing his bit.
« I never played there, maybe once in pre-season behind closed doors against Stoke, » he said. « Monday was the first time. It is always a long discussion between me and the gaffer. I play where he puts me, try to give my best, and help the team. »
The summer arrival of Florian Wirtz means that the German has slotted in as the Liverpool playmaker and Slot has been hugely impressed with how Szoboszlai has taken to his new unplanned challenge.
« He’s always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like, » said the Reds boss. « If you wear this shirt, you should give everything no matter in what position you play. As a midfielder, he’s always the first one to track back and to press high.
« And today I don’t think he did anything wrong. Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has. »
