Brighton & Hove Albion made a late offer to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez before Monday’s transfer deadline.
The England international was touted to leave the Merseyside giants to play regular first-team football this season.
AC Milan came forward with an approach on deadline day, and they were joined by the Seagulls soon after.
However, a deal did not materialise. Liverpool wanted to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi before selling Gomez.
Their inability to land Guehi from the Eagles meant that Gomez was not permitted to pursue a new challenge.
Gomez is regarded as the immediate backup option behind Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in central defence.
If the duo are fully fit, Gomez is unlikely to break into the starting plans of Arne Slot for the Premier League games.
The Charlton Athletic graduate could pursue a new club in January if the Reds manage to land his replacement.
Liverpool are likely to return for Guehi after their deadline day setback.
