Nine people have been killed in a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan.

The earthquake struck the east of the country near the Pakistan border at 11.47pm local time (8.17pm UK time) on Sunday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.

At least nine people were killed and 25 were injured in Nangarhar province, according to Ajmal Darwaish, spokesman for the regional health department.

The quake’s epicentre was near Jalalabad, Nangarhar province, at a depth of 8km (5 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.

There was a second earthquake in the same province about 20 minutes later, with a magnitude of 4.5 and a depth of 10km (6.2 miles).
