NETFLIX – ON DEMAND – SERIES
With the release on Wednesday, September 3, of the second half of the television series Wednesday, season 2, on Netflix, it is now possible to draw up an end-of-year report card for the sophomore Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega): She has shown dedicated work and boundless energy, but should be careful not to copy too much from her friends over at Hogwarts. These four episodes considerably darken the sometimes lighthearted tone seen at the start of the season, drawing Wednesday and her entourage back into the shadows, where they can truly come into their own.
The series’s success once again rested primarily on Ortega’s ability to, at 22, convincingly play an insufferably arrogant teenager. Despite the jokes the Addams parents, Gomez (Luis Guzman) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), share while standing at their daughter’s bedside, as Wednesday lies in a coma mid-season, not straying too far into the realm of dark humor. Instead, it juxtaposes teenage heartbreak and supernatural events, along with overbearing teachers and brain-eating zombies. Tim Burton, who directed the first two and the last two episodes of the season, imposed the frenetic pace and gothic atmosphere he is particularly fond of.
