Indian farmers in Punjab and Haryana are accusing PM Narendra Modi of backtracking on promises made since the 2020-2021 farmers’ protests that brought New Delhi to a standstill, putting the Hindu nationalist BJP leader under pressure as an election looms. But social media users – often BJP supporters – have shared out-of-context or false images, accusing the farmers of secret wealth, or that they’re part of the « Khalistani » Sikh separatist group.
