Fearing for his safety, this Palestinian journalist requested anonymity. Reporting from Gaza, where « accessing water and finding food are impossible tasks, » he serves as « the eyes and ears » for several French news outlets. Like his peers from other world media outlets, he has been barred from entering the besieged territory. « Although I continue to do my job, which allows me to maintain some sense of decency and dignity, my life is hopeless, » the reporter said in a voice message sent to Le Monde via WhatsApp. « But my duty is to lend my voice to those who have none. I must continue being an objective, independent journalist and carry a message of peace. » He did not say it aloud, but he is exhausted. He dreams of being taken, along with his family, « far from this unbearable conflict. » He believes he is entitled to a life that resembles life, not a desperate flight from death.
« At the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, there will soon be no one left to keep you informed, » read a message from Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the global civic movement Avaaz. The message was to be published by 180 media outlets in 50 countries on Monday, September 1. Some outlets chose to display black front pages or banners, while others published a joint statement protesting « the killing of journalists in Gaza. »
Meanwhile, the staff associations of 43 French newsrooms, including Le Monde‘s, joined the RSF initiative and called for the opening of the Palestinian enclave to international journalists.
