How social media became a diary for gender transition

« Hi, I’m Léon, and this is my voice after one week of testosterone. » In 2019, this was how Léon Salin introduced himself on Instagram. Five years later, his smile is less shy and his camera work more confident: « And here is my voice (…) which finally matches the voice in my head. » His account, followed by just over 92,000 people, has become a kind of diary: He has pinned photos of each stage of his transition, as well as advice and anecdotes.

Salin was one of the first French speakers to document his gender transition on social media, inspired by English-speaking creators such as Chella Man. « Through his videos and photos, I discovered what it meant to be a trans man, and that was what I was experiencing, » he told Le Monde. « I wanted to recreate that feeling for French speakers, especially in Switzerland, where there really wasn’t anyone. »

The creator, who has become a speaker on these topics, addresses the needs of those beginning their transitions and struggling to find information, whether social – regarding coming out and relationships – or medical. But he also reminds everyone that each journey is unique and that nothing is mandatory. « When I started, there was very little information available. By sharing my experience, I was providing a public service. »
