In Canada, studying in Quebec’s English-language universities will soon become a luxury for some. Quebec’s provincial government has announced it will nearly double tuition fees for those wishing to do their undergraduate degrees in English. The hikes apply to out-of-province and international students, except for Belgian and French students, who are protected by bilateral agreements. The province says the move is necessary to better finance Francophone universities and help reverse the decline of the French language. Application requests from out-of-province students to Quebec’s prestigious McGill and Concordia universities have already fallen. Our correspondents report.
