Andriy Parubiy, former speaker of parliament killed in Lviv, was a figurehead of Ukrainian nationalism

Andriy Parubiy, a lawmaker and a prominent figure in Ukrainian nationalism, was shot dead in broad daylight on the streets of Lviv, a major city in western Ukraine, on Saturday, August 30. Investigators said they are searching for his killer, who reportedly fired several shots before fleeing on an electric bicycle.

The murder of the former president of Parliament (2016-2019) sent shockwaves through the country and triggered a wave of tributes from Ukraine’s political elite. Parubiy, 54 years old, has played a key role over the past two decades in Kyiv’s rapprochement with the European Union and in asserting Ukrainian identity. His assassination echoed that of another nationalist figure, former MP from the far-right Svoboda party Iryna Farion, who was killed in Lviv in July 2024 under similar circumstances.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the « horrific » act and offered his condolences to Parubiy’s family and friends, promising that security services were mobilized to shed light on the case. « An investigation is underway into the circumstances of Andriy Parubiy’s murder. Many resources are deployed – all that’s necessary. »
